What makes Longines watches special
Longines was founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier in the Swiss Jura and is thus among the oldest continuously operated watch brands in the world. It has belonged to the Swatch Group since the 1980s, and this is exactly what gives it its position in the market: one step above Tissot and Hamilton, one step below Omega. To place the brand correctly, read it as a classic Swiss watch with a long history, solid series technology and a price level that mediates between entry level and luxury.
In the catalogue, this position is reflected in clear constants. All 10 models have a stainless steel case and sapphire crystal, seven run on automatic movements, three on quartz. Six of the ten use the L888 movement family including the variants L888.4 and L888.5 and state a 72-hour power reserve. For comparison within the same selection: the Flagship Heritage with the L615 calibre reaches 42 hours, where the generations separate very clearly.
The second strength is the breadth. From the rectangular quartz model DolceVita through the classic dress watch to the diver's watch with 300 metres, Longines covers almost every occasion without changing its own style. Four of the ten models are listed as women's watches, six as men's watches, and the uses range from everyday wear to the office to a suit. Our watch knowledge section explains basic terms on movements, crystals and power reserve.

What matters when buying
The L888 calibre and the 72-hour power reserve
The brand's most important technical argument lies in the L888 movement family. Six models in our catalogue use it, some as the L888.4 in the Spirit 40 and as the L888.5 in the Conquest 41, and all six state a 72-hour power reserve. In practice this means you take the watch off on Friday evening and find it still running on Monday morning, with no need to reset it. We also list the Conquest 34 with a silicon hairspring, which is less sensitive to magnetic fields. If you want an overview of the drive type in general, you will find it in our guide to the best automatic watches.
Quartz or automatic
Three of the ten models run on quartz: La Grande Classique 29mm with the L420, PrimaLuna 30mm with the L152 and DolceVita with the L178. Quartz here is not a budget version but a deliberate choice for slim cases and low-maintenance operation; the DolceVita, for example, stays extremely slim at 6.9 millimetres in height. The remaining seven models use an automatic, that is a mechanical movement wound by the motion of your wrist. Our guide Automatic vs. quartz explains which type suits which usage pattern.
Diameter and height
The range runs from the rectangular DolceVita at 20.8 millimetres wide to the Legend Diver at 42 millimetres. In between are the classic sizes: 29 and 30 millimetres for the quartz dress models, 34 millimetres for the Conquest 34, and 38.5 to 41 millimetres for the men's models. In these ranges, two millimetres often decide more about the overall impression than any dial colour. Before buying, measure your wrist using the instructions in the watch size guide.
Reading water resistance correctly
Five of the ten Longines state 30 metres, and this value means splash protection, not swimming: rain and hand washing yes, jumping into the pool no. Three models reach 100 metres, which covers swimming pool, lake and shower, namely the Spirit 40, Conquest 41 and Conquest 34. At the top are the HydroConquest 41 and Legend Diver with 300 metres each, both listed in the catalogue as dive watches. What else matters for this type is explained in the guide to the best dive watches.
Our recommendations in detail
Classics for the office and the suit
The Master Collection 40 is our Editor's Pick among the classic models: 40 millimetres, leather strap, L888 calibre with a 72-hour power reserve and a dial that we list in the catalogue as a barleycorn pattern, reference L2.793.4.78.3. At a guide price of €2,400 it sits at the top of the selection, but it offers the most complete combination of movement and design. The 30 metres of water resistance are the price of the slim, elegant construction and suit the intended use of office and suit. How the model stacks up against other brands is shown in the selection of the best dress watches.
The Flagship Heritage beside it is the calmer, historically minded variant: 38.5 millimetres, 10.3 millimetres in height, automatic calibre L615 with a 42-hour power reserve, small seconds and leather strap, reference L4.795.4.78.2. For a guide price of €2,000 you get the watch with the strongest vintage character in the range. If you want maximum power reserve, go for the Master Collection; if you want the more restrained diameter, go for the Flagship Heritage.
Sport and water: Conquest, HydroConquest and Legend Diver
At a guide price of €1,750, the HydroConquest 41 is the cheapest way to an automatic Longines and at the same time the most robust model in the field: 41 millimetres, 300 metres, ceramic bezel, stainless steel bracelet and the L888 with a 72-hour power reserve. The Legend Diver reaches the same 300 metres but solves the task with a vintage-style inner bezel, comes in at 42 millimetres and carries a Milanese stainless steel bracelet in the catalogue. Both are listed as dive watches but differ in appearance like a tool and a keepsake.
The two Conquest models are sporty but closer to everyday wear. The Conquest 41 brings 41 millimetres, 100 metres, a screw-down crown and the L888.5, reference L3.830.4.52.6, guide price €2,250. The Conquest 34 is the smaller sister at 34 millimetres, also 100 metres, with a silicon hairspring and a green sunray dial, reference L3.430.4.02.6, same guide price. Both sit in the everyday and office range and therefore also fit into our overview of the best sports watches.
Longines women's watches compared
The catalogue lists four models as women's watches, and they cover three very different ideas. The La Grande Classique 29mm Quartz is the most popular Longines model in our selection: ultra-slim, 29 millimetres, L420 quartz movement, stainless steel bracelet, reference L4.512.4.11.6, at a guide price of €1,300. The PrimaLuna Quartz 30mm costs the same, measures 30 millimetres, shows a date and relies on a curved case, reference L8.122.4.71.6. Both carry our Editor's Pick badge.
The DolceVita is considerably more distinctive: a rectangular case 20.8 millimetres wide and only 6.9 millimetres high, L178 quartz movement and a flinqué dial, reference L5.255.4.71.6, guide price €1,550. If you would rather have a mechanical sports watch on your wrist than elegance, the Conquest 34 with automatic movement and 100 metres is the opposite position. Further alternatives from other brands are collected in our women's watches category.
Heritage and aviation legacy: the Spirit 40
The Spirit 40 stands somewhat apart from the other models because we list it in the catalogue as a field watch: 40 millimetres, 100 metres, leather strap and the L888.4 with a 72-hour power reserve, for a guide price of €2,300. It takes up the brand's aviation heritage and is additionally marked as a chronometer in the data sheet, which means a certified rate. That makes it the best compromise in the range for anyone looking for a single watch for everyday and office. More models of this kind are in our men's watches category.
Price guide: what Longines watches cost
All 10 models lie between €1,300 and €2,400 guide price, so the range is surprisingly narrow. Only the three quartz dress models stay below €1,600, automatic begins at €1,750 with the HydroConquest 41, and from €2,250 the rest of the mechanical range follows. Anyone who saves with Longines therefore almost always saves on the drive, not on the case or crystal, because stainless steel and sapphire crystal are standard across all ten models.
Towards the lower end, the brand sets itself apart from its group sister brands. You will find comparable watch types for less in the guides to the best Tissot watches and the best Hamilton watches, where entry prices start considerably earlier. Towards the top, Omega follows, where in-house calibres and chronometer certificates are standard and prices rise accordingly. Longines occupies the gap in between very deliberately, and that is precisely the appeal of the brand.
How you read the numbers remains important: our figures are guide prices based on the manufacturer's recommended retail price, not a snapshot of the retail market. What a particular reference costs on a given day and whether it is available is decided by the retailer. Use the guide prices therefore to place the models relative to each other, not as a till receipt.
Typical mistakes when buying a Longines
- Overestimating 30 metres: Five of the ten models state exactly this value, including the Master Collection 40 and DolceVita. This is splash protection. If you want to swim, you need at least the 100 metres of the Conquest models.
- Looking only at the diameter: The DolceVita measures 20.8 millimetres in width, but because of its rectangular shape it looks completely different from a round 30-millimetre watch. Shape and case height often decide more on the wrist than the bare number.
- Ignoring the power reserve: 72 hours for the L888 family against 42 hours for the Flagship Heritage is a noticeable difference in everyday use. If you do not wear the watch daily, you will notice it every Monday morning.
- Wearing a leather strap near water: The Master Collection 40, Flagship Heritage and Spirit 40 come on a leather strap. Sweat and moisture shorten its life considerably, and a second strap pays off sooner than expected.
- Forgetting the occasion: A 42-millimetre dive watch under a shirt cuff is just as unsuitable as a slim dress watch at the lake. The occasion filter in the catalogue reliably prevents this wrong purchase.
All in all, Longines forgives few wrong choices, because the ranges separate cleanly from one another: drive, diameter and water resistance form a clear grid. Our catalogue currently lists no chronograph for the brand; if you need this function, you will find alternatives in the guide to the best chronographs. You can filter all other models and brands by type, occasion and budget under all watches.
Conclusion: the best Longines watch for you
For getting started, La Grande Classique 29mm Quartz and PrimaLuna Quartz 30mm at €1,300 guide price each are the most sensible recommendations, and for the first mechanical step the HydroConquest 41. If you want to cover office and suit, take the Master Collection 40; if you are looking for vintage character, the Flagship Heritage or the Legend Diver. As an all-rounder for everyday and office, the Spirit 40 leads the field, and the two Conquest models remain the pick for sporty yet everyday-friendly wear.
If several models make the shortlist, the watch finder helps: it asks about type, occasion, size, drive and budget and justifies each recommendation with the catalogue data. For the final selection, put two favourites side by side in the watch comparison and see movement, dimensions and guide price in one row. Our assessment does not replace trying a watch on, but it reliably cuts the list down to one or two candidates.
