What the second thousand really gets you
The clearest argument for this price class is the automatic chronograph. In the catalogue it starts at a guide price of €1,795 with the Tissot PRX Automatic Chronograph, followed by the Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind Auto Chrono at around €1,945. Below that, every chronograph is a quartz, solar or manual-wind model. The guide to the best chronographs shows the full range.
The second gain is regional. 19 of the 65 catalogue models between €1,000 and €2,000 come from Sinn, Stowa, Mühle Glashütte, Damasko, Tutima, Hanhart, Circula, Junghans or Nomos Glashütte, and this access to German watchmaking almost completely ends below €1,000. In addition there are in-house and upgraded movements instead of plain standard calibres: the Nomos Alpha, the Damasko A26-3, the Tutima 330, the Citizen calibres 9051 and 9054, the Seiko movements 6R55 and 6R64, the Longines L888 and the Mido Calibre 80. The catalogue's first COSC-certified automatic movement is also here, the FC-303 COSC in the Frederique Constant Highlife Automatic COSC 39 for around €1,995.
Two common expectations, however, are not exclusive to this class. Sapphire crystal is long since a given: 64 of the 65 models in the band have it, the only exception being the Junghans max bill Automatic with acrylic crystal. And 500 metres of water resistance is available in the catalogue below €1,000. Only the extreme values are new, such as the 600 metres of the Squale Matic 60 Atmos or the 1,200 metres of the Doxa SUB 300T Professional.
What matters when buying watches under €2,000
Movement: in-house, upgraded or standard
A large part of this class runs on Sellita base movements, and that is no flaw: robust, inexpensive to service, repairable anywhere. The difference arises where manufacturers go further, for example with the Mühle Glashütte 29er with its in-house woodpecker-neck regulation or the Damasko DK36 with the A26-3 calibre. Whether mechanical is the right route for you is covered in the guide Automatic vs. quartz.
Power reserve and everyday suitability
The power reserve decides whether the watch is still running after the weekend. The range is wide: the Mido Calibre 80 in the Ocean Star Tribute reaches 80 hours, both automatic chronographs 60 hours, many Sellita variants 38 hours. If you take it off on Friday evening and want to carry on on Monday without resetting, watch this number. The strongest candidates are collected in the guide to the best automatic watches.
Water resistance and case height
The metre rating is a laboratory value for static pressure, not a permitted diving depth: 30 metres, as on the Longines La Grande Classique 29mm Quartz, means rain; from 100 metres swimming is no problem; from 200 metres the territory of the best dive watches begins. Case height is just as important: the Junghans FORM A stays flat at 9.5 millimetres, while the Doxa SUB 300T Professional is taller at 13.65 millimetres. Before buying, measure following the instructions in the watch size guide.

Our 14 recommendations in detail
We organise by what defines the price class, not by brand. Within each group, the guide price decides the order. All details come from the data sheets in our catalogue.
The two automatic chronographs
The Tissot PRX Automatic Chronograph (approx. €1,795) is the cheapest route to a mechanically timed chronograph in our catalogue: 42 millimetres, sapphire crystal, 100 metres, integrated stainless steel bracelet and the Valjoux A05.H31 with 60 hours of power reserve. The Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind Auto Chrono (approx. €1,945) goes the opposite way: 44 millimetres, leather strap, likewise sapphire crystal, 100 metres and the Hamilton H-21 with 60 hours of power reserve, plus a drift angle calculator from aviation. Two very different answers to the same technical achievement.
Small German production runs and the road to Glashütte
The Sinn 556 I (approx. €1,200) is perhaps the most sensible watch on this list: 38.5 millimetres, 11 millimetres case height, sapphire crystal, 200 metres, stainless steel bracelet and the Sellita SW200-1 with 38 hours of power reserve. The Stowa Flieger Verus 40 (approx. €1,050) brings the classic pilot's watch into play: 40 millimetres, a flat 10.2 millimetres, screw-down case back, leather strap and 50 metres. The guide to the best field watches explores both approaches in depth.
The Mühle Glashütte 29er (approx. €1,450) is the unisex recommendation of the group: 36.6 millimetres, 10.4 millimetres height, sapphire crystal, 100 metres, leather strap and a Sellita SW200-1 in the Mühle version with 41 hours of power reserve. The Nomos Glashütte Club Campus 36 (approx. €1,500) is the entry to the brand: 36 millimetres, sapphire crystal, 100 metres, textile strap and the manual-wind Nomos Alpha movement with 43 hours of power reserve. More on this in the best Nomos watches and the best manual-wind watches.
Also in the band: the Damasko DK36 (approx. €1,990) with in-house calibre A26-3, ice-hardened stainless steel, 40 millimetres and 100 metres, and the Tutima Flieger Automatic (approx. €1,550) with the Tutima 330 calibre, 41 millimetres, rotating bezel and likewise 100 metres.
Sports watches with a special movement
The Frederique Constant Highlife Automatic COSC 39 (approx. €1,995) is the first watch in our catalogue with a COSC-certified automatic movement: 39 millimetres, 10.3 millimetres height, sapphire crystal, 100 metres, stainless steel bracelet, interchangeable strap system and the FC-303 COSC with 38 hours of power reserve. The Citizen Series 8 890 Mechanical NB6060 (approx. €1,095) relies on Japanese independence: 42.6 millimetres, 11.7 millimetres height, sapphire crystal, 200 metres, integrated bracelet and the in-house Citizen 9051 with 42 hours of power reserve. More candidates are collected in the guide to the best sports watches.
Dive watches and GMT: extreme values instead of the standard
We keep this group small because the guide to the best dive watches covers the topic. The Mido Ocean Star Tribute (approx. €1,140) is the retro diver for everyday wear: 40.5 millimetres, sapphire crystal, 200 metres, stainless steel bracelet and the Mido Calibre 80 with 80 hours of power reserve, the longest figure on this list. The Doxa SUB 300T Professional (approx. €1,990) marks the other end: 42.5 millimetres, 13.65 millimetres height, 1,200 metres, helium valve and no-deco bezel on a stainless steel bracelet.
For a second time zone we recommend the Squale 1545 GMT (approx. €1,070): 40 millimetres, 12 millimetres height, sapphire crystal, 300 metres, stainless steel bracelet and the Sellita SW330 with 42 hours of power reserve. That makes it a dive watch and a travel watch in one. The guide to the best GMT watches offers more choice.
Dress watches, Bauhaus and small diameters
The Junghans FORM A (approx. €1,040) is the cheapest entry on this list: 39.1 millimetres, only 9.5 millimetres height, sapphire crystal, 50 metres, leather strap, display case back and the Junghans J800.2 with 38 hours of power reserve. The Junghans max bill Automatic (approx. €1,100) is the catalogue's Bauhaus icon and the only watch in the band with acrylic crystal: 38 millimetres, 30 metres, leather strap and the Junghans J800.1 with 38 hours of power reserve. More on this in the best Junghans watches.
On a slim wrist, the Longines La Grande Classique 29mm Quartz (approx. €1,300) is the clearest solution and the only quartz watch on this list: 29 millimetres, ultra-flat case, sapphire crystal, 30 metres, stainless steel bracelet and the Longines L420 quartz movement. It needs no rotor to be elegant. More models are shown in the best dress watches, the best women's watches 2026 and the category Women's watches.
Where this price range reaches its limits
In-house manufacture chronograph movements remain out of reach in this class: the two automatic chronographs use the Valjoux A05.H31 and the Hamilton H-21, both supplied designs. A self-developed chronograph calibre costs many times more. The case material is also conventional in this class: all 65 catalogue models in the band use stainless steel, a stainless steel and ceramic combination or carbon, and titanium and gold do not appear. Titanium, of all things, is available much more cheaply, for example in the Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m NB6004 for a guide price of around €799. Ceramic bezels, on the other hand, are well represented here, for example on the Longines HydroConquest 41 and the Mido Ocean Star GMT, so they are not an argument for the extra cost either.
And one point honestly belongs here: value retention is no argument in this segment. Watches between €1,000 and €2,000 are everyday items, not investments. Buy the model you want to wear, not the one with the hoped-for return.
When the extra cost over €1,000 is not worth it
If sapphire crystal is what you are after, the jump is not worth it, as it is already standard one class lower. You also get 80 hours of power reserve, ceramic bezels and 300 metres of water resistance below this level, as the best watches under €1,000 show. If you want an uncomplicated everyday watch, you get a better ratio of substance to price there.
It is worth it as soon as a specific feature is behind it: a mechanically stopped chronograph, a COSC certificate on the automatic movement, a small German production run or water resistance beyond 500 metres. Otherwise the rule is: invest the budget in the right size and the right type instead. If you want to spend less, our guide to the best watches under €500 covers the next step, followed below that by the best watches under €200 and the best watches under €100.
Conclusion: the best watch under €2,000 for you
If you want the mechanical chronograph, go for the Tissot PRX Automatic Chronograph or the Hamilton Khaki Aviation X-Wind Auto Chrono. If you are looking for German watchmaking, you will find it in the Sinn 556 I, the Mühle Glashütte 29er and the Nomos Glashütte Club Campus 36. For everyday wear, the Citizen Serie 8 890 Mechanical NB6060 and the Mido Ocean Star Tribute are the most pragmatic candidates, and for a slim wrist the Longines La Grande Classique 29mm Quartz.
Here you are no longer paying more for sapphire crystal and power reserve, but for movements, origin and character. You can find all models with filters for type, drive and price under all watches, and the technical terms are explained in Watch knowledge. If you have two favourites, the direct comparison helps, if the type is still open, the Watch Finder, and you can browse in the classic way among the men's watches.
